Brick Owl Marketplace Officially Launches

There’s been a plethora of new LEGO marketplaces and trading sites that have come online in the past few months. Back in May, Project Swapfig was launched as a LEGO Collectible Minifigure trading site. A month later, Bricktrader started up as an auction trading site. Three weeks ago, it was announced that the popular LEGO marketplace, BrickLink was sold to Korean game giant Nexon. Today marks the arrival of Brick Owl. I’ve taken a look around the site and it looks like it’ll be giving BrickLink a serious run for it’s money although time will tell if it will be successful as it’s competition. The site has a clean design and runs amazingly fast. One nice feature is that Brick Owl is able to be integrate your wishlist from LDraw, LDD, or Brickstore. As of this writing, there are already 114 stores set up for you to purchase from. Below is the press release for Brick Owl:

Brick Owl is a new marketplace to buy and sell LEGO Parts, Minifigures and Sets. It’s been designed to be used by anybody but still have all of the advanced features that AFOLs need. Some of the features of the website include:

  • Instant checkout including instant payment via PayPal and shipping rates visible upfront while items are being added to the cart
  • Wishlist buying tool – Brick Owl will tell you which stores have your Wishlist items, how much they cost including shipping, and then let you choose which stores to buy from and add all the items

LEGO Display Piece Destroyed at Cairns Central

Australian LEGO Certified Professional, Ryan McNaught, is at Cairns Central this week to build the world’s largest LEGO Daintree Rainforest. He also brought along his 100,000 piece, $25,000 LEGO helicopter named “Elvis the Helicopter” to display at the shopping center. Last night, the masterpiece was destroyed and now police are looking into the incident. They report that an male tourist saw a group of juveniles pushed the piece over and fled the scene. Police are checking surveillance footage to see if they can identify the perpetrators. Ryan’s wife, Melinda, tweeted an image of the destroyed helicopter with the caption: “Devastation for Ryan and the McNaught family tonight as #LEGOElvis destroyed at public display #disrespect.”

Although Ryan is disappointed that his six-week project was subject to vandalism, that won’t deter him from keep displaying his work at Cairns. “The people of Cairns are lovely and the children have enjoyed the workshop. I hope to come back again soon and showcase another great Lego display.” A spokesperson says the centre is working with Ryan to have the display piece to be restored as soon as possible. Ryan is also working with local authorities to see why the incident happened. If you have any information about this crime, please contact the police.

Update: Two 14 year old kids have been caught. More on the story here.

Philly Brick Fest 2014 in the Works

Philly Brick Fest 2014

In any given year, there are several LEGO conventions that take place in the United States. BrickFair, BrickCon, Brick Fiesta, Bricks Cascade, Bricks by the Bay, and the just completed Brickworld in Chicago are some of the better known conventions in the country. One of the main reasons why these conventions exist is to provide a platform for LEGO builders and artists to show off their own creations. It also allows fans of LEGO to gather at a single place to discuss the hobby and to meet new people.

The county’s East Coast is home to BrickFair VA, located just outside the nation’s capital, Washington DC, and BrickFair NE which took place in Manchester, NH about an hour north of Boston, MA. This brings us to Philadelphia, the second largest city on East Coast and the fifth most populated city in the U.S. The City of Brotherly Love has everything you could possibly want in a big city including famous landmarks, sports teams, and iconic cuisine. The one attraction Philadelphia has been without is a major LEGO convention…. until now! With the closest major convention a few states away, Philly Brick Fest 2014 is primed to attract a new audience and create another longstanding Philadelphia tradition.

Our very good friend, Chad “Stud” Collins from YourCreativeFriends, has embarked on a mission that will bring Philly its first ever LEGO convention. “Philly Brick Fest will open up a world of imagination and creativity never seen before in our area.” says Collins.

LEGO CUUSOO ATLAS Mini Model Achieves 10000 Supporters

The ATLAS Mini Model – Education/Outreach Project by SaMe on LEGO CUUSOO has quickly reached the 10000 supporters needed to be reviewed by The LEGO Jury in the 2013 Fall Review. The reason why the project hit the goal so fast is because of the help of a science related Facebook Page. With over 5 million likes on the page itself, thousands of people saw the project on their Facebook stream and helped support it. The influx of supporters actually crashed the server that CUUSOO is on and the response was overwhelming.

The ATLAS Mini Model is based on the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. If you’ve been following science news, the LHC is a particle accelerator used to prove or disprove the Higgs boson or the “God particle.” In July 2012, ATLAS was one of the experiments that was involved in the discovery of a particle that was similar to the Higgs boson. The Mini Model consists of 560 pieces and is able to be built in less than an hour.

Congratulations to SaMe for getting this amazing achievement! We’ll see later this year if the project will pass the review stage and become an official set or not. Science projects have had a good track record on passing the review stage. Below is the official comment from CUUSOO.

Congrats on 10,000 Supporters, SaMe!

2013.06.20

Oh my Higgs Boson!

Congratulations to SaMe and to our new friends who really, really love science, on successfully reaching 10,000 supporters in such a short time.

LEGO Polybag Promotions Heading to The Daily Mail

Brick Fanatics is reporting that The Daily Mail newspaper will be giving out FREE LEGO polybags with their paper on upcoming dates in June. Back in March, LEGO’s partnership with The Sun newpaper ended and UK LEGO fans were fearing that there will not be any more LEGO sets being given along with their papers.

In this new promotion, you will be able to get the LEGO The Hobbit Gandalf at Dol Guldur Polybag (30213) on Saturday, June 29th and the LEGO Creator Little Car (30183) on Sunday, June 30th. There’s no additional information about the promotion at this time but I’m sure Richard over at Brick Fanatics will have the news as soon as it becomes available.

LEGO Castle Forest Ambush (70400) Review

When I first heard of the possible return of LEGO Castle sets late last year, I was very excited. Since I didn’t come back to LEGO until the Kingdoms line was on their way out and didn’t have a chance to get the older Castle sets from the 80’s and 90’s. Here we have the first set of the 2013 Castle sets, the Forest Ambush (70400). The set contains 90 pieces and retails for $11.99, about $0.13/piece. The contents of the box contains two unnumbered bags, and one instruction booklet.
