The LEGO Movie Review (Spoiler-Free Version)

The LEGO Movie Brick Bust

The big day came and went with much buzz and fanfare, the premiere of The LEGO Movie. As you may have seen, As with The LEGO Group, we’ve been promoting the movie heavily on here and it’s had quite a response. Here’s my spoiler-free review of it.

We first reported about the movie and its casting way back in 2012 and after two years in the making, it is finally here. Even before the movie premiered, the official sets were already in major retailers and on LEGO Shop@Home. When I first saw them, I already knew that it was going to be good. Then came the number of trailers and teasers and that pretty much clinched it for probably for everyone who remotely likes LEGO.

The biggest point in the movie is to build whatever comes to your mind which has always been LEGO’s mission statement. That’s what Emmet has tried to set out to do throughout the movie. He has to find it in himself, with the help of his friends, that he is “The Special.”

The actors and actresses did a great job on their characters. There were also some cool and unexpected cameos that we won’t spoil in this review. The jokes and puns were enough to keep everyone smiling throughout the movie, not too much but just the right amount.

The movie animation by Animal Logic was better than I had expected. All the hard work that the designers put in the CGI paid off. After watching the movie, you … Continue

The LEGO Movie Emmet’s Flying Car Review

The LEGO Movie Toys R US Building Event

Today at Toys R Us stores, they were holding a special The LEGO Movie building event. Kids were able to build and take home Emmet’s car which can also be changed into a flying car. The whole “set” consists of 42 pieces which 40 are used for the regular car and 34 for the flying version. I prefer the regular car because the other feels incomplete but I didn’t expect too much given the pieces used. Below are the instructions for both modes of the car.

Update: Thank you to IconBoy for providing a nice PDF version of the build. You can download it here.

LEGO DC Universe/Comics Super Heroes UCS Tumbler Coming in 2014?

While doing a review of the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes The Batman: Tumbler (30300) polybag, Jason from The Brick Show revealed there will be a Ultimate Collectors’ Series Tumbler coming in 2014. There’s no sources connected to this rumor so we’ll have to see if it is true. There have been a couple of versions of it already in official sets including The Tumbler: Joker’s Ice Cream Surprise (7888), The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase (76001), and The Batmobile Ultimate Collectors’ Edition (7784) which was an alternate model. The Tumbler was also submitted to LEGO CUUSOO by Brent Waller but was ultimately rejected.

Again, the UCS Tumbler is just purely a rumor as of this time since there are no actual sources for it. Check out their review below and around 2:22 is where Jason confidently states there will be one coming out this year.

LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014 Donatello Minifigure Found

LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014 Turtle Sub Undersea Chase (79121) - Donatello

Our buddies over at Your Creative Friends has gotten their hands on one of the new turtle minifigures from the summer wave of LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets. Here they have Donatello from the Turtle Sub Undersea Chase (79121). He wears some sort of breathing apparatus on his face and some gear on the torso. From the image below of the set, it looks like Leonardo is also wearing the breathing mask on the bottom corner. It’s kind of strange that they’re turtles and can’t breathe under water. At least we get a varient of Donatello as well as another version from the movie line.

LEGO CUUSOO Modular Apple Store Achieves 10,000 Supporters

The Modular Apple Store project by gotoandbuild is the latest project to achieve 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO. It now joins the LEGO Bird Project in the review stage. The project features a two-floor Apple Store which includes a glass spiral staircase. Also included are Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as minifigures. The layout of the store is your standard Apple Store that you can find in malls throughout the world. There are tables with computers in the middle of the store and the Genius Bar in the back.

Although the project has successfully achieved 10,000 supporters, I do not see it passing the review stage because of the IP that it is attached to. Congratulations to gotoandbuild for this achievement though. The BTTF – Jules Verne Train now becomes the highest supported project on CUUSOO.

LEGO Arrives on MAD Magazine This Month

LEGO MAD Magazine

April’s issue of MAD Magazine will get the LEGO treatment. Entertainment Weekly has revealed April 2014’s cover of the magazine and it features Alfred E. Neuman as a LEGO minifigure. There’s no word on what the issue is about but it will be LEGO related. As we all know, MAD offers satire as it’s main genre of literature so we can expect it to be fairly humorous. The LEGO issue will be available at newstands on February 25th.

The LEGO Movie Poster

The big day is now here! The LEGO Movie premieres today at theaters throughout the United States and some of you may have already seen it. Even before the weekend, the movie is already Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97% Fresh rating as of this writing.

There are many promotions that are going on that is related to the movie. First is all the goodies you could get even before you start watching the movie. Regal Cinemas and AMC Theaters are giving out exclusive minifigure polybags with RealD 3D ticket purchases. Check out the offers here.

The LEGO Movie Regal Cinemas Bonus

If you’re into LEGO video games, then you’ll be glad to know that The LEGO Movie Video Game is also available today. The game is available at Gamestop, Walmart, and Best Buy. Unfortunatly, the bonus offers were only available for pre-orders. I picked up mine at Best Buy and the Pyjamas Emmet polybag was packaged individually. I’m not sure if other stores were packaged the same or not. The game also includes a $7.50 voucher for a movie ticket purchase. I’ll be reviewing the game as soon as I complete it. Check out the launch trailer below.

Finally, McDonalds has also gotten into the promotion game with some Action Cups. There are 8 total to collect but could be hard to get all of them. I’ve managed to only get one of them because the one I went to wouldn’t break open the boxes for the other characters until they finish up one … Continue
